AXA chair holder

SHORT BIO

Dr Carlos Pérez García-Pando focuses his research on understanding the physical and chemical processes controlling atmospheric aerosols, and evaluating their effects upon climate, ocean biogeochemistry, air quality and health.

He initiated the Mineral Dust research line at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in 2006 and he conceived and initially developed the in-house on-line and multiscale atmospheric model called NMMB-MONARCH. His work and leadership at the BSC led to an internationally recognized dust modeling group and played a key role for the establishment and successful operation of the WMO Regional Centers.

In 2009, Dr Pérez García-Pando moved to the US where he has held research positions at the National Centers for Environmenal Prediction (NOAA/NCEP), focusing on short- and medium-range dust and weather forecasting; the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), focusing on the impacts of climate and dust aerosols upon infectious diseases in North Africa; and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space studies (NASA GISS) and Columbia University, focusing on the mineral and chemical composition of dust aerosols and their effects at longer (climate) time scales. This highly qualified and broad expertise in the field makes him a unique asset to lead the ambitious and cross-disciplinary activities of the AXA Chair program.
